In episode ten of Literary Canon Ball we discuss the graphic novel This One Summer.
Rosie and her parents return to Awago Beach, the small town where they have spent their summers since Rosie was a little girl. There, Rosie will reunite with her younger friend Windy and fall into the familiar patterns of beach and bikes and lazy afternoons. At least, that’s what Rosie thinks will happen.
Teetering on the brink of adolescence but not quite sure enough to ditch childhood forever, Rosie finds herself swept into a web of marital problems and teenage pregnancy and horror movies.
A classic coming of age story, This One Summer, written by Mariko Tamaki and illustrated by Jillian Tamaki, was published in 2014 and received a swag of awards, including the Eisner Award for Best New Graphic Novel, the Printz Honour for outstanding young adult literature and the Caldecott Honour for exceptional picture book art.
